Think Like a CEO

Comfort with unresolved ambiguity

Employees are rewarded for solving problems cleanly + closing loops. CEOs live in the permanent discomfort of half-answered questions + they move forward anyway. For many female entrepreneurs conditioned to over-prepare + seek consensus before acting, this is the hardest shift. The employee mind wants certainty before commitment. The CEO mind treats uncertainty as the baseline.

Employee mindset

"I need more information before I can decide."

CEO mindset

"I'll decide with what I have and adjust as I learn."

Implement today

Set a personal decision timer. When you catch yourself gathering "just one more" piece of information, give yourself 20 minutes to decide with what you already have. Write the decision in one sentence. Act on it. Review in two weeks not sooner.

Valuing leverage over effort

Employees are paid for hours + effort. Hard work is the currency. But CEOs are paid for outcomes + a leveraged outcome requires thinking about what multiplies your impact, not what fills your day. Many female entrepreneurs, especially those who rose through meritocratic environments, keep solving problems with effort. The real shift is asking: What's the one move that makes ten other moves unnecessary?

Employee mindset

"I worked 12-hour days this week. I'm earning my success."

CEO mindset

"Which two decisions this week remove 20 problems next month?"

Implement today

Every Sunday, write your task list. Next, cross out everything you could delegate, automate, or delay by 30 days without real consequence. What's left is your CEO work. Protect it fiercely. The crossed-out items are a habit, not a business.

Treating your own opinion as data

Employees validate their judgment through managers, feedback loops, + consensus. The unspoken rule: your instinct is a starting point, not a conclusion. Female entrepreneurs often carry this deep into their businesses β€” over-surveying customers, seeking too much external validation, shrinking their own read of a situation. CEOs treat their firsthand pattern recognition as a data source. They test it, yes, but they don't apologize for it before someone else confirms it.

Employee mindset

"Let me get a few more opinions before I commit to this direction."

CEO mindset

"My read is X. I'll design a small test that disproves it if I'm wrong."

Implement today

Before your next customer conversation, market decision, or pricing move; write down your instinct first, privately, in one sentence. Then gather input. After: compare. Over 30 days, you'll learn whether your gut is well-calibrated or where it has blind spots. Either way, you've started trusting it like a CEO.

"CEOs don't build businesses on validation. They build them on decisions, ownership, + the courage to be wrong before they're right."

How many times will you be wrong before you're right?

Bette Nesmith Graham [Liquid Paper]
Metric of Failure: 10 years of formula adjustments.

Stephanie Kwolek [Kevlar]
Metric of Failure: Thousands of unsuccessful material trials.

Marion O'Brien Donovan [The Disposable Diaper Cover]

Metric of Failure: Countless failed structural cuts + sewing designs. The Ultimate Rejection: When she took her perfected reusable diaper to manufacturers, executives from every major company completely rejected her. She had to fund her own manufacturing to prove them wrong, eventually selling the company for $1 million in 1951.
