Motivation Isn't a Personality Trait. It's a Diet.

Let's kill a myth right out of the gate some female entrepreneurs are just "motivated" and some aren't. Nope. That's not how this works.

Motivation isn't something you either have or don't have, like a gene for curly hair. It's more like hunger. It comes and goes based on whether you're actually feeding it. Most female entrepreneurs I coach are starving. They've been running on caffeine, guilt, and a vision board for eighteen months, wondering why the fire keeps going out, when the real problem is that nobody ever told them what fire actually needs to burn.

Turns out, psychologists figured this out decades ago. It's called Self-Determination Theory, and it says human motivation, the real, sustainable, doesn't-need-a-hype-video kind β€” runs on exactly three things:

1. Autonomy. You need to feel like the choices are actually yours.

2. Competence. You need to feel like you're getting better at something that matters.

3. Relatedness. You need to feel connected to people who see you.

Starve any one of those, and motivation dies. Doesn't matter how badly you want the outcome. Doesn't matter how good your business plan is. I've watched brilliant, capable women burn out running businesses that were, on paper, working because one of these three tanks was bone dry.

Autonomy: Whose Business Is This, Really?

Here's where I see this go sideways constantly. A woman starts a business because she wants freedom, and eighteen months in, she's built herself a job with a worse boss than the one she quit herself, but dressed up as "the algorithm," "what converts," or "what the guru said to post."

Autonomy doesn't mean doing whatever you want with zero structure. It means the choices you're making, your offer, your voice, your calendar feel like yours. When I work with clients on their market message, this is half the battle before we even get to language. If a woman is parroting someone else's positioning because it worked for them, she hasn't found her voice, she's found her ceiling. Motivation can't survive on borrowed conviction.

Competence: Are You Actually Getting Better, or Just Busier?

Competence is feeling forward motion seeing evidence that the skill is sharpening, even if the outcome isn't perfect yet.

This is where the Translation Gap shows up in my work more than anywhere else. Most entrepreneurs aren't failing because they're bad at what they do. They're failing because they can't yet translate what they do into language their market actually recognizes as valuable. That gap between competence and the perception of competence is a motivation killer, because you can be improving constantly and still feel like you're getting nowhere, simply because the market isn't reflecting your growth back to you. Close the gap, and suddenly the same skill set reads as expertise instead of noise.

Relatedness: You Cannot Self-Help Your Way Out of Isolation

I say this as someone with a social work background before I ever became a business coach: humans are not built to sustain effort in isolation. Full stop. You can have the best strategy in the world, and if you're building it alone, refreshing analytics at 11pm with nobody to call, motivation has no chance. It's not a discipline problem. It's a structural one.

This is exactly why I don't do generic strategy calls.

Relatedness isn't a nice-to-have bolted onto coaching...it's load-bearing. When women in my programs get real, unfiltered feedback instead of vague encouragement, and when they're in rooms with other founders who actually get it, something shifts that no amount of solo grinding produces. It's why I built The Real Talk Network for Female Entrepreneurs. Connection isn't a soft perk. It's fuel.

Why "Just Be More Disciplined" Is Bad Advice

If you've ever felt like you should be more motivated and beaten yourself up for not being "disciplined enough" I need you to hear this: discipline is what you reach for when the real tanks are empty. It's a patch, not a fix. You can white-knuckle your way through a quarter on sheer willpower. You can't run a decade-long business that way, and I've coached close to 900 women long enough to know the ones who last aren't the most disciplined ones. They're the ones who built businesses that actually feed all three tanks.

The next time motivation disappears, ask yourself:

  • Where did I hand my autonomy away?

  • Where am I improving without anything reflecting that improvement back to me?

  • Who actually knows what I'm building really knows, not LinkedIn-knows?

Fix the starvation, and the motivation comes back. It was never the problem. It was the symptom.
